Even though the North American International Auto Show in Detroit focuses on luxury brands, we also took a look this week at a couple of compact models that are drawing attention in Europe.Examine it!: North American International Auto Show 2015The NAIAS in Detroit is the first major event of its kind this year. Visitors come to the trade fair from all around the globe to check out the latest trends and designs in the automotive world.Alongside the big American brands, German carmakers always make a splash in Detroit as well. This year Mercedes presented its new GLE Coupe, while BMW showcased the facelift its designers gave the brand's 6-Series. Volkswagen wasn't far behind. It showed off its new hybrid SUV, which was developed specifically for the US market. And last but not least, Audi rolled out the second generation of its popular Q7. Present It! Fiat 500XFiat's off-road testing facility in Balocco, Italy, is really no place for a Fiat 500. Or is it? But the latest model, the 500x can handle minor rough stuff without breaking stride. The crossover version of Italy's cult car as a 4x4 or 4x2 with a "Traction Plus" system are both ready for a bit of adventure. And all models have nearly 18 centimeters of road clearance and generous approach and departure angles that mean exploits will go off without so much as a scrape. Test It! Seat Ibiza ST FRAt SEAT, the opposite number to VW's Polo is called the Ibiza. But unlike the Polo, a station wagon version of the Ibiza is available in addition to the three and five-door models. Drive It! tests the sporty FR version of the Ibiza ST, with a chassis that's 15 millimeter closer to the road, snug seats and a leather steering wheel. The FR logo graces the grill and under the hood there's a double turbocharged, 1.4 liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 103 kilowatts of power. The model Drive It! tested was a 6-speed manual transmission. In Germany, the sporty, compact station wagon starts selling at 21,325 euros. Spot It!: BMW Motorrad's S1000 RRBMW has rolled out its new sports superbike, the S 1000 Double-R. It was originally designed for the race track, and that's where we test drove it: on the Circuit Monteblanco in Spain. The engine has been re-designed to deliver slightly more power and enhanced torque. 199 horsepower and cutting-edge technology make this Beamer superbike the fastest on Earth. And when acceleration takes priority, the optional HP Shift Assistant Pro comes into play, letting the rider shift both up and down without ever hitting the clutch. Vintage: Corvette C1The Chevrolet Corvette is a true milestone in automotive history. The iconic car started as a roadster in 1953, built at Chevrolet's legendary plant in Flint, Michigan.Designed by Harley Earl, the Corvette was the first mass-produced car to sport a fiberglass body.
