Drive it!: The Motor Magazine
Drive it! makes it a speedy start to the new year. Join us on a drive in the fastest Porsche around, and a test run in VW’s Cross Up! We also find out how car-buying habits differ around the world, put the new Range Rover through its off-road paces and take a closer look at a new dream machine from BMW.Admire it! Porsche 918 SpyderPorsche has taken the leap into the future of sports-car design with its 918 Spyder. The parallel full hybrid has three engines: a conventional gasoline-powered unit in the rear and an electric motor on each axle. The internal combustion engine alone puts out 652 kilowatts, making this superlative sportscar the first street-legal machine to round the Nürburgring track's north loop in under seven minutes. It pushes the 918 Spyder from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.6 seconds, topping out at 345 kph. This ultimate sportscar is hardly meant for running errands - but then, with a price tag of some €800,000 in Germany, the owner will hardly need it for that. Test it! VW Cross Up!Carmakers have to be increasingly creative to make sure their models stand out.Almost every carmaker has started offering SUV versions of many of their models. But now, Volkswagen has given the off-road treatment to an unexpected set of wheels: its smallest, the Up!. The new edition is called the Cross Up!. This is a minicar with a distinctly off-roader air about it. The sporty, rugged look is a product of exclusive exterior elements, while the chassis was given 15 millimeters more ground clearance. But is it nothing more than a design gimmick? Or can the Cross Up! really handle cross country?Examine it! Car-Buying Habits Around the WorldBuying a new car can be a very emotional affair. That’s certainly true in Germany, at least. Germans love perusing the infinite array of options and putting together their dream-mobile - even if that does mean having to wait weeks or even months for delivery. But what’s the situation in other countries? Drive it! crosses the Atlantic, where car-buying habits are markedly different. Car buyers there expect to leave the dealership with the keys right away. A cross-cultural report about people and their beloved automobiles.Taste it!: Range Rover VogueLand Rover is known for it's high-quality SUVs.Originally released in 1970, the famous Range Rover is now in its fourth incarnation. With a new chassis that allows the suspension to be adjusted manually and an aluminum body that helps it shed the pounds, the new edition is a different beast from its predecessor. We tested the 4.4-liter Vogue edition, which can break 100km/h in less than seven seconds. The car's impressive power and ability to brave the elements make it perfect for adventurous driving.Spot it! BMW S 1000 RThe S 1000 R sees BMW unleashing a new beast onto the streets. The Dynamic Roadster, as it’s labeled, is based on the S 1000 RR superbike. The new naked bike has been reduced to the essentials, revealing its raw muscles. The engine has a 118-kW output and delivers a max. torque of 112 Nm. The Rain and Road modes allow the S 1000 R’s output, torque and ABS responsiveness to be adjusted to road and weather conditions. Drive it! took a closer look at the BMW S 1000 R.
