The Frankfurt International Auto Show (IAA) is the primary focus of this edition. Drive It! will also be looking at a sportscar that is mass-produced but with a price tag putting it out of reach for most drivers. We also check out an SUV and a rather special convertible. To round off the show: a trip to the coast for an annual collectors' get-together.Examine it! The International Motor Show in FrankfurtThis year sees the 65th edition of the IAA.What began with the presentation of eight automobiles 115 years ago in Berlin is now considered one of the world’s major car fairs. The last time it was held, in 2011, the IAA featured 183 world premieres. Almost 930,000 visitors used the opportunity to find out about the latest trends. This year about 1,000 exhibitors from 34 countries are presenting their products. Drirve It! takes a look and reveals what the future holds for automobiles.Present it! The Porsche GT3The Porsche 911 GT3 is a thoroughbred sportscar with a naturally aspirated engine, and is the sporting pinnacle of the 911 series.Its most famous feature is the huge rear spoiler. Over 14,000 GT3s have been built since 1999. Now the revamped fifth generation has been unveiled. Porsche has promised a more dynamic drive and greater suitability for everyday use. We test the 3.8-liter boxer-six engine with 350 kW / 475 hp, which propels our red devil to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Top speed is 315 km/h. The price tag in Germany: just under €138,000.Taste it! The Ford KugaWith SUVs continuing to enjoy great popularity in Europe, Ford is hoping to profit from the trend.The second generation Kuga hit showrooms this year. Ford has given the SUV a new design, new technology and new engines. It's part of the carmaker's campaign to sell over a million SUVs in Europe over the next six years. Together with ADAC, the German Automobile Club, we put an all-wheel drive Kuga to the test.Test it! The 6 Series ConvertibleChasing those last rays of summer sunshine in style: we put BMW's 6 Series convertible through its paces.The long hood, the set-back cabin position, the long wheelbase and the flat shoulder line: the typical features of the 6 Series convertible. It also comes with an old-school fabric top and a luxurious interior. We tested the 640d, with a six-cylinder diesel version delivering 230 kW / 313 hp from its 3-liter displacement. Its huge torque (630 Newtonmeters) sees it rocket from zero to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.Examine it! The 2013 VW Beetle Sunshine TourEach year, VW Beetle fans travel in a convoy to the Baltic seaside resort of Travemünde.Beetle owners from across Europe flock to northern Germany each August. They come to take part in the Sunshine Festival, the biggest gathering of Bugs on the continent. This year, over 400 Beetles -- old and new -- met in the city of Lübeck before driving together to Travemünde. Many came decorated specially for the occasion.
